How I Transitioned from Adobe and Resolve to CapCut for Video Creation

For more than ten years, I've been using the go-to tools for video creation: Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and DaVinci Resolve. These programs have really supported so many professional projects, whether it's for commercial shoots or personal creative endeavors. These days, I find that 90% of my video creation happens on a platform that a lot of people don’t even see as a "pro" tool—CapCut.

This change didn’t happen overnight; it’s been shaped by years of changing needs and a creative world that’s moving faster than ever. In this post, I’m excited to share my journey with you! I’ll talk about why I decided to make a change and highlight three key reasons that make CapCut my favorite tool for creating videos.

The Era of Adobe and Resolve

Throughout my career, I've found Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve to be absolutely essential. Using Premiere's timeline-based editing and its integration with After Effects really helped me create some detailed edits with amazing motion graphics. Resolve’s color grading features are truly impressive; they really added a cinematic touch to my videos. Let me share why these tools have been my go-tos for such a long time:

  1. Professional-Grade Features:

    • Premiere Pro allowed multi-track editing, advanced effects, and seamless integration with other Adobe tools.
    • Resolve’s color grading tools, like the node-based system, offered granular control over every shade and tone.
  2. Customizability:

    • Both tools could be tailored to specific workflows. With the right plugins and presets, I could create any visual style imaginable.
  3. Versatility Across Projects:

    • From YouTube videos to client advertisements and even ASMR content, these tools handled everything with precision.

But as my projects grew, the demands on my workflow changed too. With the surge of quick content like shorts, reels, and lively ASMR experiments, we’re starting to see some weaknesses in these otherwise strong platforms.

The Challenges of Using Adobe and Resolve

Despite their strengths, these tools also came with significant challenges:

  1. Steep Learning Curve:

    • Both Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve required extensive training to master. Even after a decade, I still found myself referencing tutorials or troubleshooting complex issues.
  2. High System Requirements:

    • Running these programs smoothly required powerful hardware. Editing 4K video or adding advanced effects often meant dealing with lag, crashes, or the dreaded spinning wheel.
  3. Subscription Costs:

    • Adobe’s subscription model can feel like a financial drain, especially for creators who may not utilize the full suite of tools.
  4. Time-Intensive Workflows:

    • Creating even a short-form video often involved exporting clips, round-tripping between Premiere and After Effects, or managing heavy files for Resolve.

With content creation moving towards quick, easy-to-consume formats like TikToks, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, it started to seem like the time and resources spent on traditional programs were a bit of a waste. That's when I stumbled upon CapCut.

CapCut: The Unexpected Solution

CapCut made its debut as a mobile-first editing app developed by ByteDance, the folks behind TikTok. At first, it was seen as just a simple tool for beginners, but it has really grown into a strong, easy-to-use editing platform that can compete with more traditional software for some specific tasks. Let me share how and why I took the plunge:

Reason 1: Simplicity Without Sacrificing Quality

CapCut’s greatest strength is its simplicity. Unlike Adobe and Resolve, which often require navigating a labyrinth of menus and features, CapCut offers a streamlined experience.

Ease of Use

  • Intuitive Interface: CapCut’s design is minimalistic, making it incredibly easy to pick up and start editing, even for complex projects.
  • Mobile and Desktop Integration: Whether I’m on the go or at my desk, I can seamlessly switch between devices. This flexibility is invaluable for quick turnarounds.

Surprisingly Robust Features

CapCut isn’t just a “basic editor.” It offers:

  • Auto-Captioning and Subtitles: Perfect for social media content, this feature saves hours of transcription work.
  • AI Tools: From background removal to video stabilization, CapCut uses AI to automate tasks that once required manual effort in Adobe or Resolve.
  • Built-In Effects: Its preloaded transitions, filters, and effects rival many plugins I’ve paid for in Adobe.

Creative Freedom

  • For ASMR videos, CapCut’s audio editing tools are shockingly effective. I can tweak audio levels, apply noise reduction, and even sync soundscapes without leaving the app.

Reason 2: Speed and Efficiency

Being a creator, I really value efficiency. CapCut really shines when it comes to getting things done fast while still keeping the quality high.

Lightweight and Fast

  • Low System Requirements: Unlike Adobe and Resolve, CapCut runs smoothly on devices with modest specifications. This means fewer crashes and less frustration.
  • Instant Previews: I no longer have to render every time I add a new effect. CapCut’s real-time previews keep the creative flow uninterrupted.

Social Media Optimization

  • Exporting Made Easy: CapCut’s presets for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube take the guesswork out of exporting. No more fiddling with aspect ratios or compression settings.
  • Quick Edits for Short-Form Content: The platform is designed for snappy edits, which is perfect for creating engaging reels, shorts, and ASMR snippets.

Cloud Integration

With CapCut’s cloud storage, I can easily get to my projects no matter where I am. When I'm capturing those soothing ASMR wave sounds at the beach or putting together a cozy coffee shop walkthrough, everything I need is right there with me.

Reason 3: Cost-Effectiveness

I really appreciate what Adobe and Resolve can do, but man, those subscription fees and hardware upgrades can get pretty pricey. CapCut really stands out with its incredible value compared to others.

Free Core Features

  • CapCut’s free version includes nearly everything I need for professional-grade edits. Even its premium version, which unlocks additional effects and features, is a fraction of Adobe’s subscription cost.

No Need for Expensive Hardware

  • Because CapCut is optimized for mobile and lightweight desktop usage, I’ve saved thousands on high-end PCs and graphics cards. My current setup, which includes an Insta360 Go 3 and a basic laptop, handles everything I throw at it.

Accessibility for All Creators

  • By eliminating the financial barrier to entry, CapCut democratizes video creation. This aligns perfectly with the needs of modern content creators, who prioritize agility and affordability.

The Remaining 10%: Why I Still Use Adobe and Resolve

CapCut has become my go-to tool, but I still use Adobe and Resolve in my workflow. When it comes to long projects, detailed color grading, or client work that needs some fancy effects, these tools really stand out. But you know, their use has really become more specialized as CapCut keeps growing and adding new features.

Real-World Examples: CapCut in Action

Here are some examples of how I’ve used CapCut to create content:

  1. ASMR Videos:

    • Editing wave sounds and adding subtle visual effects, like color corrections and text overlays, takes minutes in CapCut.
    • Auto-captioning tools make these videos more accessible to a global audience.
  2. Social Media Shorts:

    • Quick transitions, music synchronization, and trendy effects help my videos stand out in crowded feeds.
  3. Client Deliverables:

    • For simple product showcases or B-roll, CapCut delivers professional results faster than traditional tools.

The Future of Video Creation

Making the switch to CapCut wasn't just about changing tools; it was really about changing how I think. As creators, we tend to get pretty attached to the software we’re familiar with, even if it’s not really meeting our needs anymore. CapCut shows us that you can have simplicity, speed, and affordability all while still getting that professional-grade quality.
